Digital citizenship

We are extremely proud of the way we integrate ICT into everyday learning at Lift North Ormesby.

We've worked hard over the past few years to ensure that all children at school are confident users of modern technology, preparing them for life in the 21st Century!

Technology is used in a whole host of ways at our school - let us show you...

We're extremely pleased to have been accredited with the Naace ICT Mark - November 2015

Pupils & ICT

The children at North Ormesby use ICT every day to enhance their learning and because of this, they are the REAL experts! Here are some of the impressive ways that modern technology is integrated into our curriculum...

  • We have over 250 Apple iPads in school strictly for use by the children, including an iPad Air each from Y2. We have worked very hard for a number of years now to ensure their use brings maximum effectiveness and impact. You can see a video about this here.
  • We believe in variety being the 'spice of life' for ICT in our school, so iPads are not the only device used. Each class is kitted out with PCs and we have a selection of laptops including Macbook Pros and Macbook Airs.
  • To help see what the children are doing and to evaluate our own and other's work, we use Apple TV to 'mirror' the screens of individual iPads. This comes in very handy for assessment and for presenting media.
  • We use an augmented reality called 'Aurasma' right across school to help us bring static content to life! Here's Nicole explaining how it works.
  • We want the children in our school to have the opportunity talk about their learning whenever they want and to collaborate at every chance. We use 'Seesaw'
  • We use a whole host of apps and websites to help enhance the core curriculum - one of these is 'Skoolbo', a great new program to help with reading and maths. The children are immersed in an incredible learning world and are highly motivated by the inbuilt rewards. Earlier this academic year, we were successful in a competition involving schools from the UK and the USA. Denise Lewis called to congratulate us!
  • We have some very passionate movie creators in our school and the iPads are great for recording their acting, but from a production point of view, 'Animate It' is a super tool for creating stop motion videos using modelling clay/plasticine.
  • This is 'Cognitoy'. CogniToys are Wi-Fi-connected learning companions for kids ages 5+ that answer questions, play games, spell, tell jokes—and best of all, get smarter over time.
  • We're very fortunate to have our very own permanent Green Screen! This is a great tool to inspire the children's writing; they can transport themselves to unknown worlds, see important people from the past or enter the worlds of the stories they know.
  • We love using our iPads to develop oracy - we have special microphones that enhance the recording of sound and we use apps like Keynote to produce presentations to deliver back to the class.
  • As well as 'augmented' reality, we like to use 'virtual' reality to discover places we really can't visit - like space. We have over 50 VR headsets in school now -these experiences are great for writing!
  • Meet Sphero and Ollie; robotic, programmable toys which are operated through an app on the iPads. It's hard to use words to show how cool these are - click their names to find out more instead!
  • We like to use ICT to create our own art too! We use apps like Art Set to work with different materials and practise techniques, and we use PhotoShop Touch to produce stunning graphic designs like this work in the style of Andy Warhol.
  • We realise the impact self and peer assessment can have on learning and we let our technology take it a step further! We use Skitch to take photos of our work then annotate and edit over it. We use storage spaces like Google Drive to hold our work and then print it out to be stuck in books and on displays.
  • QR codes work in a similar way to Aurasma, linking those with a device to content that we've made and stored on the internet. We use QR codes in books too - in this book, the code will take you to the video of this group delivering their presentation.
  • Times Tables Rock Stars is another web-based activity that we have signed our children up to. It is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice. Each week concentrates on a different times table, with a recommended consolidation week for rehearsing the tables that have recently been practiced every third week or so.
  • The children at North Ormesby are encouraged to use any and all of the technology we have on offer and they love it! Our multi-sensory C-Touch screens mean up to four children at a time can work together!
  • This is Spag.com, a variety of online Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar tests that we use to identify gaps in learning across school which we then use to inform planning.
  • This is 'Dot' and 'Dash', real robots, charged and ready to play out of the box. They respond to voice, navigate objects, dance, and sing. Using 'Blockly', and other apps you can programme Dot and Dash to create new behaviours, doing more with robotics than ever possible.
  • This is our Parrot Rolling Spider, an ultra-compact drone controlled by smartphone. It flies indoors and outdoors with surprising speed and stability and is another piece of technology that we can programme using the app 'Tickle'.
  • Meet Osmo. Osmo is a unique gaming accessory for the iPad that comes with games that challenge the thinking of children in various ways. The attributed apps work on children's spacial awareness, word recognition, spelling, inference and drawing skills, but all content can be customised to suit the needs of the children using Osmo.
Staff & ICT

If our staff are competent users of modern technology, then our children will be empowered to do the same! Here are some of the ways that the staff at North Ormesby are using ICT...

  • Each member of staff in school is given their own iPad. They use these during lessons to take assessment notes, provide visual aids for children, responding to and engaging in staff-to-staff communication and logging safety & behaviour concerns through our online safeguarding tool, 'CPOMS'.
  • CPOMS is a revolutionary software application for monitoring child protection, safeguarding and and a whole range of pastoral and welfare issues. Working alongside our school’s existing safeguarding processes, CPOMS is an intuitive system to help with the management of child protection, behavioural issues, bullying, special educational needs, domestic issues and much, much more.
  • We've equipped every classroom in school with one of these C-Touch multi-sensory screens, including a monstrous 80-inch model in our school hall. Superbly responsive, no shadow and all complete with its own motorised to adjust it's height accordingly.
  • Each classroom also has its very own Apple TV. This gives teachers the ability to 'mirror' any content from their iPads or other Apple equipment straight to their C-Touch screen. It's also an excellent tool for showing off and evaluating the work children on doing on their iPads.
  • We have worked very hard at North Ormesby to provide a depth of support for staff across the school and have an excellent monitoring system for evaluating and growing our practise. Part of this involved the use of Iris. Iris is an online platform and mobile camera system which allows us to record our lessons, reflect privately and share with colleagues.
  • We use an online tool called Perspective to help us self review confidently and accurately, create and maintain robust improvement plans, and quickly monitor performance and impact.
  • We use Evidence for Learning across school, an app that is used by more than 40000 teachers and child care providers in across more than 40 countries to support assessment, planning and management of the curriculum. This tool helps when making judgements on children's progress each half term.
  • We use Progresso as a central database for children's details and registration. We also use Progresso's ability to provide robust data tracking and SEND/vulnerable groups data which we update on a day-to-day basis.
  • The staff in every class use their iPads to take regular photos of the fun our children are having and then post the most exciting ones to our school Twitter and Facebook feeds.
  • Provision Map is a management information system designed specifically for SENCOs and includes every tool you need to succeed with SEND management.  We use the tool to record all of our extra provision and it means we can track every penny spent and the evaluate the quality of our provision.

Parents & ICT

We use ICT to play an important role in the communication between our school and parents. Here's how...

  • We have, what we believe, is a fantastic Twitter feed! We post text, images and videos on a regular basis throughout the school day to keep parents (and others who are interested!) up to speed with what's going on in our school.
  • Check out our Marvellous Me case study; a gadget for collaborating with parents that we've been using for numerous years now!
  • Using 'Progresso', we send text messages regularly to inform parents, notifying them about up and coming events.
  • We've developed our own school YouTube page - we post our 'Excellence, Enjoyment & Enrichment' videos on there as well other school events and sharing of good practice. You can see the videos here.
  • We've also recently developed a Parents Academy; a website designed to support our parents with everything from learning support and SEND information, to health and debt management. Click here to see the page in its infancy.
